I'd be at a complete loss if I had to find the perfect birthday present for the Dalai Lama's 80th birthday.
Good thing this year, he made it really easy.
On Sunday in Anaheim, California, before 15,000 close friends arrived to celebrate his birthday, the Dalai Lama held an intimate breakfast to share his message of love. I was unbelievably honored to be invited as one of the guests. As a Christian, I have mad respect for any person who works to channel their life's energy into a spiritual sense of being. Of course I had to bring my three dearest friends who each celebrate this message in every aspect of their lives. Before we walked in, we blessed ourselves with these cool bracelets from the My Intent Project with symbolic messages that each of us needed.
Clearly...I need "Calm" because....well, because the devil did a lil tap dance on my face this week.
So there we were, sitting amongst tables of leaders, Nobel Peace Prize Winners, celebrities, and monks, while the Dalai Lama shared his one birthday wish - that we all live #withcompassion.
Living with compassion is one of the three main commitments made by the Dalai Lama, and it has since then turned into a deepening conversation for me. Compassion is something I'd like to think I've always strived to have. It's as simple as considering another person's story. What was their journey? What got them to think, act, react the way they do? What is their hurt, or joy? I thought it was interesting for the Dalai Lama to select something like this for his own birthday, a day that should be about him but of course, being the Dalai Lama, his one wish for his birthday was that other people do good in the world, something that will benefit everyone. At the end of the day, compassion is just that- to understand.
Tell me about your experiences with compassion. What does it mean to you? You know how much I love hearing your stories. And special thanks to the Dalai Lama for signing and gifting my wonderful summer read.
